Welcome to Saranac Lake Middle School!
My name is Amy Spicer, and I am honored to serve as your principal. I am pleased to be starting my fourth year here at Saranac Lake Middle School, and I continue to feel incredibly grateful to be part of such a welcoming, student-centered school community.
I’m originally from Western New York and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education from SUNY Fredonia, where I also completed my Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in Secondary English. After graduating, I moved to Lake Placid and spent 22 wonderful years teaching English at Lake Placid Middle-High School. I loved working with students, their families, and being a classroom teacher.
Throughout my teaching career, I continually sought opportunities to grow and lead. I served as English Department Chair, Co-Leader of the Mentor Program, and District Data Coordinator. After 22 years in the classroom, I returned to graduate school and earned my advanced degree in School Building Leadership from SUNY Plattsburgh in May 2022. I am thrilled to now be leading and learning alongside the outstanding students, families, and staff in Saranac Lake.
Saranac Lake Middle School is a vibrant and supportive place where students can learn and grow. Our dedicated staff works tirelessly to create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for all. Teaching is student-centered, grounded in research-based best practices, and aligned with the New York State Standards and the Next Generation Learning Standards. Each grade-level team meets daily to address student needs, collaborate on curriculum, plan enrichment experiences, and communicate with families. If you have any concerns about your child, please reach out to the classroom teacher, grade-level team, or school counselor; we are always happy to partner with you.
We will continue to use ParentSquare as our primary communication platform. It allows us to keep families informed and engaged throughout the year. We also remain committed to The Positivity Project, our social-emotional learning program. This initiative helps students develop self-awareness, recognize their character strengths, and build strong relationships with others. It is already a part of the culture at Petrova and Bloomingdale Elementary Schools, and we will continue to build on that foundation in our daily announcements, classrooms, and school-wide activities.
Beyond academics, Saranac Lake Middle School offers a wide range of extracurricular and cultural opportunities. Students can explore their interests by joining groups like the OutRide Group, Adventure Group, Art Peaks, Student Council, Jazz Band, Yearbook, Robotics, YENGA, or join one of our many 21st Century Community Learning Center Activities. We also offer a variety of modified sports for 7th and 8th graders to support healthy, active lifestyles.
I’m looking forward to a fantastic school year filled with learning, connection, and student growth. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, ideas, or thoughts.
Warmly,
Amy Spicer
